On-site Genetic Counseling
Genetic counseling is a professional health care service involving assessment of risks for birth defects and genetic diseases, and patient education about diagnostic procedures and testing options. Genetic counselors train through master's degree programs in human genetics and counseling and are board certified by the American College of Genetic Counseling.
Genetic counseling may be recommended to patients for a variety of reasons. We work closely with the major genetic health care companies in our area to ensure that our patients have access to genetic counseling as well as a variety of other genetic services.
Genetic counselors from Genzyme Genetics and Emory Genetics Laboratory see patients in our offices and genetic counseling appointments are often coordinated with maternal-fetal medicine or obstetric visits.
Referrals to a genetic counselor are made in accordance with a patient's health insurance plan. Billing for genetic services, both laboratory and genetic counseling is through the genetic service provider (typically this will be Genzyme Genetics or Emory Genetics Laboratory).
