Northside Women’s Specialists midwifery service provides the full scope of midwifery care. Established in 1993, the NWS midwifery service started with two dedicated certified nurse midwives (CNM) including Judy Fielder. The service quickly grew to include four full-time midwives and remains one of the oldest midwifery services at Northside Hospital.
Our certified nurse midwives share the philosophies held by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) including individualized patient-centered care. We are committed to practicing evidenced based care with minimal and judicious use of interventions.
We believe all mothers-to-be deserve the opportunity to have a midwife be part of their care. Due to our unique relationship with our perinatologists, even women with higher risk pregnancies can benefit from the midwifery model of care.
Know Your Choices
We encourage all of our mothers-to-be to educate themselves about childbirth options. Our goal is to support a positive birth experience, whether that involves IV pain medications, an epidural or natural child birth. We have had multiple success stories with methods such as Hypnobirthing, Confident Childbirth, Lamaze, as well as other alternative methods for pain management. Birth balls, hydrotherapy and squatting bars are also readily available options.
We have a strong collaborative relationship with our consulting physicians. They support our policy of waiting to schedule routine inductions until after completing 41 weeks gestation, unless medically indicated. Northside Women’s Specialists midwives and physicians support vaginal birth after one prior cesarean (VBAC) or trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC).
